Maybe Sam Huntington was right. Nations aren’t about boundaries created by rivers and mountains anymore. It might be that what people look like, and what they believe in, is more important these days. What else could explain the sudden upsurge in secessionist feelings?
I’m a good ol’ boy from the Deep South so I get the Confederate thing. The big bad Federal government trying to tell a state what’s best for them and ignoring what may or may not be the truth on the ground. Sort of like the Federal Highway program, national drinking age, or No Child Left Behind all do today. So yeah, there are times when the local mayor really does know best.
Still, it’s amazing that pro-slavery groups and the damned liberal carpet baggers could get together on the matter. I’d love to be a fly on the wall when the bullets start flying. There’s no way in hell these two groups can get along long enough to get anything done.
It’s like asking Bill O’Rielly to have dinner in Harlem with Al Sharpton. Yeah, and people in hell are going to be getting air conditioning soon too.
