I’ve been trying to post something all morning but the high winds keep blowing the electrons off of my screen. Either that or the dog ate my homework. Look, if wind is a reason to close the schools then I can use it as an excuse to not post anything until lunch.
It was a long weekend with THE WOMAN out of town and me having to shuffle kids to baseball, softball, and a cotillion dance. Granted I grew up in the dark ages when horses were still pulling cars but hearing all the aluminum bats really got under my skin. That “ting” sound is not what the Good Lord intended when he gave man the sport of baseball. It’s so much more natural to hear the “thunk” of wood hitting leather. Think about it for a minute. If metal bats are all that great why is Major League Baseball still using wood?
I really doubt that it’s a safety issue, but anything that gets metal out of the batter’s hand is a good thing. Sure a miss hit ball can shatter a wooden bat, but that doesn’t happen often in the youth leagues. The real issue here is kids not taking the time to learn how to swing a bat and having to cheat the pitch by using a lighter bat they can come around faster with. I can remember razzing the batters that used aluminum bats when they came to the plate because everyone in the field knew that this was a kid with no real swing. The guys that had power were all using wood, and we respected them when they came to the plate.
