Yeah, right.  If these books leave a legacy, then I’m a monkee’s uncle.

USA Today hit the streets today with a list of the most influential books of the last 25 years.  And it is one sorry assed list.  Harry Potter and the Da Vinci Code?  Give me a break.  At best those are two marginally well written books that sold far better than the should have.  The book by Stephen Hawkins is a very worthy book to be on any list like this and so is The 9/11 Commission Report.  I guess you could make room on your shelf for the Purpose Driven Life if you felt like you were floundering in life.  How the hell anyone could think that Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus is worth the paper required to print it amazes me.  That book screwed up more men (cutting their balls off) than anything else in the past 25 years.

With real writers like Kurt Vonnegut dying who is going to replace them? For a while I thought the Tim O’Brien might be the guy, but he seems to have written all he had to say already.  Seriously, can you name another major writer today that’s doing something besides pop/chick lit?  Nah, me either.

And that makes me sad.
