Too Hot for Golf??
No, not her. But I do admit that Natalie Gulbis would be quite a distraction to anyone’s game. What is illegal, at least it was yesterday is the new driver from Nike.
In their never ending quest to let the rest of us play like Tiger Nike continues to push the edge of the rule book with their new equipment. This particular driver can be had for a mere $399.99 at Dick’s or any other generic sporting goods store. What makes it so revolutionary (and illegal) is the square head. The USGA says that the driver in some cases had excessive “characteristic time” — which means that the drivers stayed in contact with the ball too long. I guess that’s a bad thing. With the current
crop of pros killing the damn ball with every swing the USGA is stepping up efforts to make all equipment perform the same. Rumor has it that they will soon begin to target ball construction too.
Frankly, if your game is like mine the new head shape isn’t going to help you any. If anything the ball staying on the club face longer is only going to make the slice greater. Most of us hackers should leave our drivers at home and come off the tee box with a 3 wood anyway. Still, I’ve seen a few of these on the driving range already. The guys that own them are swearing that it’s the greatest thing since the invention of the two ball putter. But I bet most of them feel obligated to say that after skipping a car payment to buy this thing.
Still, Nike is recalling the club before the USGA forces the issue. Claiming that the manufacturing process produced deviations is a slick PR trick in my mind. I’m sure that Callaway (also selling a square headed driver) was quick to call the rules violation hot line. But it won’t really matter to most of us. Either we will play with the non-conforming driver or we’ll keep our money in our respective pockets.
I’ve had a lot of guys beat me on the golf course. Most were old men playing on equipment they bought before I learned to drive. That’s the real truth of the matter. The average golfer would be better served buying a few extra lessons and buckets of ball. The high end, high tech equipment really only matters if you’re Phil or Tiger.
