The world is a hard place to be. It's harder if you're stupid.

This is one way to keep up with the kid. And a few rolls of duct tape every month is a hell of a lot cheaper than a real day care. Thanks to Terry from Tillar for passing this one along.

I'm not a big college sports fan, especially college hoops and football.  Both are pretty much feeder programs for their professional counterparts and profit centers for the schools.  The real scholar athletes are the ones playing volleyball, lacrosse, golf (yes I said it), swimming and half a dozen other sports that are never on television.  In fact, I wouldn't really care if football and men's basketball were dumped from college campuses tomorrow.  I'm all for the good qualities that sports can provide for students, and even the schools.  It's just that I think all of that has been lost in the fog of cash that is generated.

But some nights every nickel is worth it.  Last night was one of those nights.  I get so sick of hearing all the pundits talk about the tradition of Big 10 (or is it 12?) football.  The only reason they have a better tradition is they had better press coverage earlier on.  No other reason.  The schools in the South were smaller and didn't have the big city papers turning average players on average teams into gridiron gods.  It's one of those grand traditions in college football that is still carried on.

Two years ago when Auburn went undefeated for an entire season they couldn't even get a mention for the National Championship.  Despite playing in the toughest football conference in America, the SEC they were still treated like ugly step-sisters at the big dance.  This morning saw the first of the apologists for Ohio State, claiming it was a single player that kept OSU from the national title.  Why not admit that Tressel got out coached?  He was desperate when he went for it on fourth and one deep in his own end of the field.  Florida owned Ohio State from the moment they tied the game on their first possession.  You could see it on the faces along the Ohio State sideline.

Florida junior defensive end Jarvis Moss explaned everything to the press before he even left the field.

"We played a lot better teams than Ohio State this year," Moss said, a piece of blue confetti sweatstuck to his neck. "I can name four or five teams in the SEC that would compete real well against them."

And he's right.  The SEC runner ups are tougher than the champions of most other football conferences.  That's why it'll be another ten years before another SEC team claims a national title in football.  The SEC teams beat each other up to bad during the regular season for one of them to look as dominate as some other teams.  So if you want to root for a a national championship then find a team from the Big 10, PAC 10, Big East or one of those other leagues.  If you want to watch great semi-pro football, tune into your local SEC game.
