Eat you hearts out gang. The family and I are headed out to the beach on Saturday. We’ve got a bungalow reserved down at Fort Story, VA for the next week.
Fort Story is a military post that still does a fair amount of training, but when you ask anyone about it all they want to talk about is the private beach. There’s almost a mile of beach that is sealed off from all the riff raff that floats down to Virginia Beach this time of year. The rates are dirt cheap and we had to book our bungalow a year in advance.
The place is loaded with history, from the first landing place of the white man, to fighting the battle that pretty much ended the American Revolution just off its coast. Ft. Story also has what was probably one of the first pork-barrel projects in American history, the first lighthouse paid for by Congress. Try to convince me some Senator from Virginia wasn’t having a tough election that year.
On one side of the base the beach is on the Chesapeake Bay. On the other side the beach faces the Atlantic Ocean. The image from Google Maps doesn’t do it justice. It’s a great place to be near stuff, but secluded at the same time. Since it’s a functional military base we can expect a peaceful week.
I have no idea how much, if any, internet access we are going to have. Somehow I’m sure I’ll figure out a way to post a couple of times while we are there.
