Almost a month since I gave up the CrackBerry and so far there have been few ill effects. (I did go back to using my out of date Palm because I have to have some form of electrons attached to me.) Truth be told, the function I miss the most is having my Outlook Contact list in my phone. I’m still trying to find the right sync cable and software package to make that happen. There is no way on God’s green Earth that I am going to hand key all 284 of my contacts in to my phone.
The funny thing about this is the chaos it has caused with the IT people at the office. When I got here two years ago they put my personal CrackBerry on the network no questions asked. But I had to pay bribes and damn near offer burnt sacrifices to get the software installed for my Palm. The RIM product could have wreaked chaos on the network while the Palm can barely play Tetris without melting down the battery. It’s like I work for the govenrment or something.
The biggest hang up with the Palm over all is trying to write will on the Metro. The screen on Palm handhelds is fairly sensitive so slight twitches can play hell with entering text. I was really adept at typing with one thumb while hanging on to the hand rails. Using a stylus is going to take more practice. Plus writing long items really sucks down the battery.
For the moment I can only charge/sync my device at the office. Turns out that my handheld is so old that Palm no longer supports it, so I’m dependent on E-Bay merchants for a spare sync cradle/charger. That’s a bummer.
Overall, I’m really pleased with the step backwards in personal technology.
