This is a damn sad thing to read this early in the morning.
These two guys were in a nation, trying to help put it back together after decades of being ruled by a monster and this is the thanks they get from the people. It makes me sick to my stomach.
I know that the bulk of the Iraqis are glad to have Saddam tossed out on his ass. Enough of my buddies have been over there and seen first hand how bad it was under the former leadership and how badly the people want something different. What a crock it is that a very small minority is disrupting our progress in restoring Iraq to a normal nation.
It sounds like there is a pretty solid plan in place to get out of Iraq that is based on goals and not a political calendar. It’s the right way to go, making sure the Iraq government can take care of the country before outside troops leave. South Vietnam is the perfect example of what happens to a nation when the foreign military holding it together leaves too soon. I sincerely hope the United States does not make that mistake again.
As hard as it is right now, we really need to stay the course in Iraq. It is the only way to get that nation to stand on its own for the long term. But even more importantly it will show Muslim extremists and the rest of the world that America will honor our commitments. We need to show the world that our morals are more valuable to us than the politics of our next election.
That would be a true sign of leadership.
