The world is a hard place to be. It's harder if you're stupid.

Just yesterday CZ and I were talking about how former Presidents have fared when they left office.  Most just fade into the background (Ford, Truman, Ike, Johnson), other write books (Nixon), and others do non-controversial good deeds (Carter, Bush I, Clinton).  Reagan’s illness pretty much keeps him out of any of the above groups.

As long as they stick to those lanes, CZ and I agreed, they tend to do alright, getting out of their lane causes problems.  We both thought President Carter is great at building houses for poor people, but a blooming idiot at any other time.  Today we were validated.  As best as I can tell Carter’s real beef is that some of the work he did while in office is being undo by the current administration.  It would seem to me that as times change our policies need to change too.  Some times it is hard to see that when you are emotionally connected to your own works.

In a nutshell, Carter needs to stick with building houses.  If he wants to be President again then he needs to run for office again.

Speaking of a guy that probably should be the President some day, but probably won’t, John McCain seems to be taking a tremendous amount of heat these days.  In the past weeks he’s been lining himself a bit more to the right so he can better run in the primaries.  In my mind he’s got to pull more to the right to get the Republican nomination but he’ll lose the general election by doing so.  McCain is the one major Republican that can cross the aisle right now and not lose his integrity doing so.  He’s got to find a way to hang on to that quality.

After all the talk about immigrants rights lately (here, here, here, here, and lastly here) I thought it might be a good time to look at it from an “old school” perspective.

“In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person’s becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American…There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag… We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language… and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.” Theodore Roosevelt 1907

It seems to make sense to me.

P.S.  As to the last link above, the one where the kids cut class to protest the immigration legislation, keep this in mind.  Kids will cut class at the drop of a hat.  Hell FDSM would protest clean air and free cable if it got her out of class for an afternoon.

Why does this come as no surprise?  Sharon Stone at least practices what she preaches by approaching young women trying on clothes to spread her, uh . . ., er, message.  You have to wonder if this would be getting any press if Basic Instinct 2 wasn’t due out soon.

Freakdaddy can now go to his happy place.
