There were a couple of things that I wanted to say today, but other people have already said them better.
George Will nails it right on the head (Get it, right? As in right wing. Never mind.) with his commentary about the recent ruling from the Supreme Court. If the law schools that feel Army recruiters don’t belong on campus then those schools should stop accepting Federal dollars. As with anything in life, you should always be willing to stand up for your beliefs; and you should be willing to make sacrifices to support your beliefs. If you can’t give up some of your security blanket for what you believe in, then do you really believe in it at all?
The more I read about Chief Justice John Roberts, the more I think he may be the first sane person appointed to the Court in a long time. Or at least the first that writes in a way that makes sense to the average person:
“Accommodating the military’s message,” Roberts wrote, “does not affect the law schools’ speech, because the schools are not speaking when they host interviews and recruiting receptions.”
Recruiters are obviously not components of law schools; they are outsiders on brief visits for a limited purpose. “Nothing about recruiting,” Roberts wrote, “suggests that law schools agree with any speech by recruiters.” Besides, “We have held that high school students can appreciate the difference between speech a school sponsors and speech the school permits because legally required to do so, pursuant to an equal access policy.” Then, Roberts’s tartness: “Surely students have not lost that ability by the time they get to law school.”
See how easy that was to read and understand.
And you know that I’ve talked about the whole notion of building a fence between us and Mexico before. Today Robert J. Samuelson is coming out in favor of building one too, but more out of the frustration that nothing else seems to be working. I don’t agree that raising wages will balance out some of the racial problems created by illegal immigration. I do think that finding a way to shore up our Southern border is becoming more and more important. We do not want to see riots similar to those in France this summer taking place in Texas or California 15 years from now.
And finally, Barry Bonds is an ass-clown and should be kept farther away from Cooperstown than Pete Rose. Rose may have gambled on the game, but at least what he did on the field as a player was by his God-given talent alone. No clear or cream for Johnny Hustle.
Back with more tomorrow.
