Normally, I agree with George Will, but today I’m not so sure. Yes, we do have to help the ones that are already here, but living on the fringes, to incorporate themselves into our society but is pardoning past bad acts the right thing in this case? If it is how do we stop the tide of illegal immigration that is rolling up from Mexico? We are already underwriting a group of people that do not put anything back into the American system. The nation needs to determine how much farther we are willing to go into our own pockets to subsidize this population.
There are hundreds of job types that Americans no longer are willing to do and we need a group of people that are willing to do them. But if we continue to ‘out-source’ that work how long is it before we end up with the type of class/ethnic riots that hammered France last year?
If someone wants to come to the U.S. and earn a better life, I think that’s great. It’s the way that the vast majority of our families got here to start with. But I do think that there should be a concerted effort by that person to give up what they are leaving behind and becoming an American. We do only have one flag, and we all should stand tall and salute it.
What we are seeing the American Southwest these past few days is only the precursor to events similar to those last summer outside of Paris. Events which have their roots in Nero’s Rome, where the empire’s foundation had rotted out below the surface and collapsed under the added weight of non-Romans.
More. Later.
