Now you know why I miss AL. I often wonder how different Memphis could be if only more of its residents were exposed to different things. Unfortunately this city is a great example of the saying "vicious cycle". At least one if it's citizens has started a petition to recall the eternal mayor, King Willie. Maybe there is hope after all. Sweet Home Alabama!

"It’s just confirming Thomas Wolffe, you really can’t go home again."

I think it depends on what you're looking for. I was away from my hometown for 23 years, and am very happy to be back. I think the difference is that I haven't tried to restart my old life - I've yet to run into any of my old friends, and I just went by my old high school last week to show my kids how to get there for an activity. On the other hand, going back to the DC area reminds me how fortunate I am to have escaped (old friends nonwithstanding).

TC, I went to a wedding several years ago in Memphis. I arrived early & spent the first few days exploring the city. I went a walking tour of historic homes, I was the only person, the National Civil Rights Museum, one of about three people, & then to the Memphis Museum of Fine Art, again, no one there. After the wedding I went to Graceland. Fat tourists in tank tops, long lines & trailers as far as the eye could see. I think America in general has alot to learn in terms of what Memphis represents.

Thanks for letting me get that off my chest!

p.s. You all do have great bbq!
