While other students planned to play college football, Timmy Bailey signed with a different recruiter — Uncle Sam.
Now, after serving a year in Iraq, the 21-year-old private in the U.S. Army National Guard is back home. And remarkably, four years after Bailey graduated from a tiny high school in the rural Mississippi Delta, the soon-to-be sophomore has attracted more attention from college coaches than ever.
“It’s maturity — I’m not your average recruit,” Bailey said. “I can talk better with the coaches on a one-on-one basis, and they love it.”
Bailey is expected to sign a binding national letter-of-intent to play linebacker at Mississippi State on Wednesday, the first day of the national signing period. . .
Finally, somebody is doing right by a guy that was willing to serve his country.

There used to be an anti-DC blog called DCSOB that was a good read. But the guy hated DC so badly that he moved to Chicago and started a new blog. He seems much better now.
In a recent rant on why he quit his job and left DC he did make one point that I completely agree with:
3) The steam table joint where I ate lunch most days. Sure, the cashiers were really nice. Sure, they let me fill my tray all over again for free when a Capitol Police officer knocked my tray over. Sure, duck quesadilla day was the best (it was probably just chicken, but whatever). Still, the DC steam table lunch is eerily analogous to the plight of the office worker: there are many choices, but they’re all flavorless and will make you fat and lethargic.
Amen, brother. I dread going to lunch most days because of those steam table joints. In our office we call it ‘food by the pound’ since that’s how they charge you for it.

Ok, let’s see what’s going on today. The boss is taking an unscheduled day off, the dryer at home has died (again) and I’m still not used to the new uniform.
It was a good weekend, with lots of downtime and no major drama. Our big event was taking the kids to see the Winslow Homer Exhibition at the National Gallery of Art. THE WOMAN and I had a great time, but the kids didn’t have the attention span to do it justice. It always amazes me how crowded the Gallery is.
This morning there are a couple of editorial/op-ed pieces in the Post about Iran. While I agree that the current regime in Iran should not be trusted with nuclear power, I do think that eventually the planet needs to rely primarily on atomic power for electricity. It produces energy cheaper and cleaner overall than coal does, and it leaves the planet intact instead of strip mined. When it comes to Iran, I’m in the camp of Senator McCain.
We should bomb the hell out of them now while we have the chance and deal with the consequences later. It may sound short sighted, and is clearly very un-PC. But if we let a radical fundamentalist get access to the Bomb we are screwing ourselves. It you think the President of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, doesn’t have the balls to use a nuclear warhead you are out of your tree.
The MidEast is the most volatile region in the world and to allow what is basically a rouge state to possess nuclear strike capability is wrong. Like it or not, we are the only superpower in the world, and it looks to be that way for at least another 20 years. We have to use this small window in time to shape the policies of other nations so that they conform to what is in OUR long term interests. If it means that we become an occupying force in South West Asia for the next half a century, then so be it.
It’s about time we starting living up to our responsibilities as a Republic.
