For all the hype and hoopla surrounding the Rose Bowl and Vince Young one thing is clear. The kid is all but outgrown the orange uniform of Texas. But that doesn’t make it clear that he’s grown into the uniform of an NFL quarterback, at least not a starting quarterback. He’s got the physical gifts, and it looks like he may have the smarts, to play in the NFL. While an extra year of college ball comes with the risk of injury it also comes with the chance to grow up some and learn more about the position.
Still, I have to agree with Wilbon this time. There is no better time for Young to come out. He’s on an incredible high right now after his Rose Bowl performance. Hanging out at Texas would mean that his next season might not look so good and cost him money, even if he does not get hurt. He needs to leave college now and cash in.
Just remember, that when he suits up for the Saints, Titans, or whoever next year that he won’t be the instant savior. No team drafting low enough to get Young is going to do anything next year of meaning. They will only improve by one or two games, then get to draft early again in 2007.
More later.
