According to Kornheiser, the ‘Skins still have a mathematical chance to get into the playoffs. Which is one of the sure signs of your season being over; local sports writers doing the hard math to find ways for your team to make the playoffs. But at least he’s trying to stay on the Redskins bandwagon.
His partner in crime, Wilbon, is joining the other rats deserting the ship. And he’s right to do so. This is a team that can’t finish a game. The New York Football Giants did a better job of closing out their game with the Seahawks yesterday afternoon, and the Giants freaking lost that game. They came back in the last minutes to tie the game and then got into position to win it in regulation; plus twice more in overtime.
That’s what an offense is supposed to do. Not run a decent game for three quarters, force the defense to make the game winnable, then choke when it really counts. Yes, Brunell still has an arm, yes he understands the game plan and can stay composed under pressure; but he can no longer win games. And that is the core of this team’s problem. Their leader on the field can’t produce when it counts.
The next two weeks should be better. The Rams and the Cardinals are both easy pickings. But no way in hell can this team close out a surging Giants, or solid Cowboys. Against a crippled Eagles team it’s a toss up.
Why not move on to a quarterback that gives this team a chance at winning? Get Ramsey in there and let him show his next team what he can do.
More later.
