Saturday Morning Dose of Common Sense
This morning in the Post Wilbon came to DeBerry’s defense. In an article full of common sense he not only defended the coach, but politely blasted Hank Aaron. Aaron has been the champion of blacks in baseball since the day he made his first major league roster. Maybe he has a right to complain about the lack of black guys playing baseball, but only because he worked so hard to make it possible for them to play.
The reality is black guys don’t really want to play baseball anymore. They are more geared to basketball, it’s the cool game these days. Today’s lifestyle is based more on speed and flash than it is patience and strategy. Basketball appeals to the people living that lifestyle, baseball doesn’t. The reality is also that at the moment, and this could change in the next five years, black guys are faster than white guys. That’s why the college coaches recruit them, and that’s why the NFL owners draft them.
Like Wilbon said:
players, whether they’re black quarterbacks, white cornerbacks or
Argentine basketball players.
It don’t get much simpler than that.
