Tony Kornheiser wrote two separate articles for the Washington Post this week, both of them dealing with the demotion of the Redskin’s former starting quarterback, Patrick Ramsey. Tony K must be related to the kid somehow to get out of the ESPN studios long enough to find his word processor again. Frankly, Tony K has turned into a running joke for the sports fans in DC since he all but took a leave of absence from his desk at the Post. But this seems to have woken him up.
Ramsey got the shaft from Coach Gibbs Monday when the coach yanked him from the starter’s job. Gibbs has a real hard on against guys that can’t hang on to the ball, so there’s some logic to pulling a guy with an interception and two fumbles in the first three series of a game. Never mind that the other guys on offense are saying privately that it was a receiver on a bad route that caused the interception on the first drive. Ramsey had a legit fumble to end the second drive, but the third was not his fault at all. When his neck separated from his shoulders it was only logical that his hands would let go of the ball.
Color me a Ramsey guy. I think the young man has the arm it takes to exploit a defense that’s set up to take out the running game now that he has receivers that want to catch the ball. He’s gained a bit of touch on the ball too. He managed to pass for over 100 yards in less than two quarters of football. He’s got the toughness to take a beating and get up wanting to play again. Defenses around the league respect him for all the punishment he can take. He’s calm under fire. These days he can see the blitzes coming and make the smart dump or get the ball out of bounds. His quarterback rating broke 100 in a couple of his starts last season.
Before he got his head taken off, Ramsey had the offense moving down the field with a smooth precision. His best offensive play DID NOT occur because of a defensive penalty.
What does Brunell offer? Nothing, except the coach likes him. He’s got none of the mobility that landed him in the Pro Bowl. His arm was never among the strongest in the NFL and now it’s even weaker. His QB rating was among the worst in the league, and that includes Jeff Garcia in Cleveland. He’s not a playmaker in any sense of the word. Remind me again how many 100 yard passing games this broken down old man had last year? The fact that he didn’t turn the ball over Sunday is the only thing working in Brunell’s favor. And that may be all he needs. Well, that and the fact that he’s the coach’s pet.
Gibbs is clearly trying to not repeat his mistakes from last year. The biggest complaint we heard was that Brunell was left in the game for too many weeks. Coach Gibbs wasn’t going to hear that again this year. But in my mind he overreacted. He should have put Ramsey back into the game after the half time. Let the kid show what he had, not pull him at the first sign of trouble. After all, didn’t the team bring in a new quarterback coach just to get Ramsey to the next level? Is that guy getting the door shown to him because of last Sunday? That would seem only fair.
If Ramsey didn’t tell Gibbs that he wants to be traded, then you can bet his agent did. There are plenty of teams looking for a quarterback with as much upside and class as this kid has. Cleveland needs a working class quarterback to get that program stabilized until Crenel can get the rest of his team in place. Arizona got suckered into hiring Warner and those fans would go nuts for a young man with the potential of Ramsey. A couple of other teams could use him as the guy to groom this year and put on the field next year.
Gibbs should cut him loose now. If he doesn’t then he’s going to end up eating crow. Because the old guy, that’s you Mark Brunell, is going to go down with an injury pretty soon, it is only a matter of when. Then, the young guy, the one with the strong arm and bruised pride is going to get on the field again. He’ll have plenty to prove, not to himself, but to the coach that benched him and to the coach he’ll start for next season. Let’s just hope that Denny Green has the sense to put Ramsey’s agent on his speed dial.
